Austin Pendleton est un auteur, acteur et metteur en scène américain.
Il fait ses premiers pas au théâtre en jouant avec la compagnie Steppenwolf dans Side Man, Oncle Vanya, Valparaiso, Uncle Paul, Inspecting Carol, Love Letters, Educating Rita. Il met en scène Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune, Harvey, La Chatte sur un toit brûlant, Les Trois Sœurs, Loose Ends, Say Goodnight, Gracie.

Avec d’autres compagnies, il joue dans Le Journal d’Anne Franck, Doubles, Hail Strawdyke, Fiddler on the roof, Hamlet, Richard II, Richard III, The Last Sweet Days of Isaac, Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mamma’s Hung you in the Closet and I’m Feeling So Sad, En attendant Godot.
Il met en scène The Little Foxes, Spoils of War, The Runner Stumbles. Il a régulièrement collaboré avec le Williamstown Theatre Festival.

Il a écrit Orson’s Shadow (pièce dans laquelle il a joué) et Uncle Bob (Oncle Paul). Il a également joué dans plusieurs films et téléfilms.

Sa pièce Orson’s Shadow a été récompensée par la L.A. Drama Critics Award dans la catégorie meilleure pièce. Hail Strawdyke a obtenu un Clarence Derwent Award et The Last Sweet Days of Isaac a reçu un Obie Award.
